Drawing with... GLUE?!!



These pictures came out very expressive! We experimented with elmers glue and a rice paste glue.



After the glue dried, we rubbed in some soft pastels.

Summer 2009 Outline of Classes

TUESDAY JUNE 9th
Book and Illustrator: Dream Machine by Walter Wick
Project: to communally build a sculpture (cityscape/fairytale land/under the sea/etc), hide small items in it, and create an “I Spy” poem. This will be an on going project throughout the month during any spare time. Donations of any interesting recycled objects will be appreciated!


THURSDAY JUNE 11th
Book and Illustrator: Secret Seahorse, illustrated by Clare Beaton
Project: to create a fabric collage with felt as the basis, and enhanced with various fabrics, laces, buttons, sequins, bangles, and embroidery stitches.




TUESDAY JUNE 16th
Book and Illustrator: Smoky Night, illustrated by David Diaz
Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears, illustrated by Leo & Diane
Project: to create a batik-like image by tracing an outline with glue on black paper, then filling in the spaces with soft pastel. While the glue is drying, we will begin a second project of cutting an image into smaller sections, altering the pieces, and reconstructing them into an image.


THURSDAY JUNE 18th
Book and Illustrator: Smoky Night, illustrated by David Diaz
Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears, illustrated by Leo & Diane
Project: to finished the projects started on the previous Tuesday.






TUESDAY JUNE 23rd
Book and Illustrator: Tuesday by David Wiesner
Project: to create a sequence (comic book style) of pictures that depict a surreal (dreamlike) occurrence using pencil drawings with watercolor washes.






THURSDAY JUNE 25th
Book and Illustrator: Denise Fleming
Project: to create handmade paper using the pulp painting method – applying colored paper pulp to a screen to create an image. See Denise Fleming’s website for a great introduction: http://www.denisefleming.com/pages/papermaking.html




TUESDAY JUNE30th
Book and Illustrator: Eric Carl, Golem by David Wisniewski
Project: To create a multitude of colored and textured pages to be used for collage on Thursday.
- marbleizing
- stamping (i.e. bubble wrap, etc)
- oil pastel/watercolor resist
- painted tissue paper
- bubble printing

THURSDAY JULY 2nd
Book and Illustrator: Eric Carl, Golem by David Wisniewski, Plenty of Pockets illustrated by Scott Menchin
Project: Using our decorated papers, we will experiment with the ways the
above illustrators use the collage technique.
